THE BRANDO EXPERIMENT

THE BRANDO EXPERIMENT

The Brando Experiment: The Notes Are About Him. So Where Is the Author?

Style + Confidence + [ ? ] = Presence

Every experiment starts with a question. This one has been pinned to the wall for weeks, surrounded by sketches, measurements and notes in the handwriting of a man who doesn't sleep much.

Trial one. Trial two.

The subject sits. He reads. From the collar down, he looks the part. Then he's asked to cross the room, and the formula stalls. Second attempt, same subject, same hesitation. The scientist goes back to the board.

The specimen, itemised

Finding yourself on paper is strange. Agreeing with it is stranger. Whoever made these notes has an eye: warm colours over loud ones, a cut that sits rather than strains, nothing added for the sake of it.

Nothing in the lab is left to chance, least of all the outfit. A cotton tee in slate. A mustard chino, tapered through the leg. And at the bottom of the page, underlined twice, a suede boat shoe.

Taken apart. Put to the test.

Soft suede. 360-degree lacing. The Brando Trautman, under the microscope.

Soft suede with a rich, natural finish, shaped into a classic moc-toe and laced all the way round. It slips on without negotiation. Inside, a leather lining keeps it soft and breathable all day. Underneath, a lightweight contrast rubber sole gives it the flexibility everyday wear asks for.

Movement, as it happens, is the one thing the subject hasn't managed yet. The scientist hasn't made the connection.

The variable remains

The equation stays open. Another batch is mixed, measured and set aside. Somewhere in the lab, someone else has a theory. He isn't sharing it yet.

The uniform changes. The standard remains unbroken.
